An Introduction to Play-By-Mail Play-by-Mail (PBM) has been around for many years, in both North America and Europe. It was developed as a means of gaming that would allow players to compete with others that share their interest in gaming of all kinds. Since it's inception, PBM has been improved drastically, the original games being very rudimentary conceptual games, to modern PBM games that encompass thousands of variables into a realistic gaming system and use email and fax as well as traditional post.
One of the main advantages of PBM, over board-gaming, is the "blind" concept. PBM games allow you to participate with realistic limitations placed on the knowledge that you are aware of, regarding your enemies Most board games inherently give you more information on enemy movement than you realistically should know, thus reducing realism and playability. Another advantage is the number of opponents that you can play against. A PBM game can have anywhere from two to over fifty players active at the same time. In recent years the idea of multiple players has really taken off with many games featuring multi play over the net. Play by mail has evolved to take this into account, and now you can submit turns online and receive your results via email or downloaded from a web site. Play by email certainly retains the old feel of games, while allowing for the modern convenience of high speed technology. No longer are we at the mercy of the postie. Another strength of Play my e/mail is that the man running the experience for you is very easily reached, and has usually designed and written the game you are playing, so is probably very good at fixing things or intervening if your email server suddenly crashes and you need to submit
orders in a hurry. Games Moderators (GMs) are usually friendly and interested in your game experience, and keen to help you play. Having a good GM is very important, however his decision is usually final. About Jason I am a 47 year old ex soldier who has been wargaming since 13. I also study military history and have been a PBM GM since 1992 with a string of successful war and football games. I first stumbled upon PBM in a gaming magazine shortly before deploying to the Falkland Islands as part of the post war garrison. The game was called Capitol, a space warfare game. The game kept me sane, and on returning home i looked for another challenge. Seeing Ancient Empires advertised, I got the start up and was hooked. After winning that game, I sent a list of possible improvements to the GM, who replied “If your so bloody clever, you should run it”. That was all the prompting I needed. After a few months Ancient Empires was resurrected with me at the helm. Vietnam followed, and then my favourite game “Company Commander”. Over the years Vietnam has faded away, but ancient Empires has been developed from day one to the game it is today. Over the last months of 2008 and the first of 2009 I have added a new version of Company Commander, which started May 2009. With this web site, I hope to bring a higher level of interactivity to the games. I hope that Company Commander and Ancient Empires will go from strength to strength.
